Making Hexagram Grids
I wanted to make a Hex Grid. Eventually, I downloaded:
Inkscape Hex Map Extension
by Pelle Nilsson and Contributors
GNU General Public License
And my problem was solved.
So, thanks Pelle Nilsson and Contributors!
Usage
Inkscape
Extensions -> Boardgames -> Create Hexmap
- The control options seem fairly straightforward to me.
- I'd simpy advise going through all the tabs.
- As with many things, it may be easier to output a 'standard grid' (whatever that means) and manipulate directly.
- For instance, setting the Alpha to Zero allows using the exported
png
(a separate step) as a mask. - This is how I envision using HexMap.
- I decided not to upload any such (alpha zeroed: aka background transparent) images, as there's not much point once one has the HexMap Extension installed.
- Besides (in this post), the HexMap Extension is what I am 'Selling'.
- Good going Pelle Nilsson and Contributors!

- I could not get the extension to make multiple copies at once.
- In between uses, I needed to close and reopen Inkscape...
- which wasn't the most convenient.
- My computer can only handle so much.
- 1000x1000 Grids aren't happening anytime soon.
- I hardly ever push an image greater than 2500px (width or height) to the web.
- So, a 50 Column Wide by 10 Row High Grid with Hexes at 50 Pixels is all I need.
- Such a Grid took (roughly) 10 Seconds to Draw on my machine.
- For timing, I used the One Mississippi Two Mississippi Method.
- Extrapolating out and that 1000x1000 Grid may well take 5+ Hours to create.

Gimp
Something similar can be found in Gimp.- Create An Image
File -> New -> 1000x1000
- Fill That Image
Filters -> Distorts -> Mosaic
On the plus side, the Mosaic Filter makes Cobblestones right out of the bag.
So, it's all a matter of what one wants.
